My girl is one

My baby daughter turned one on Tuesday and I can’t quite explain how elated this makes me feel. It’s rare to experience such change and progression in just a year, and she gets still more interesting, interested, and inspiring every day. Happy birthday my love.

Last week I wrote that I was intending to bake up a storm for her tea party, with fairy cakes and some experimental Victorian biscuits. I thought this quantity of cooking might be a little optimistic, and it was. Thanks to her taking an unusually long morning nap, I just about got around to baking a citrus polenta syrup cake (courtesy of good old Nigel Slater), and my friend brought round a lovely loaf of banana bread as a healthier option. While we didn’t have too much cake, it didn’t matter because Nigel’s recipe has to be one of the tastiest ever. Rich, tangy, nutty and super moist, as my friend said, ‘I think this could be one of the best cakes I’ve ever eaten’.

It most certainly was, and since being a mum, I’ve tasted far too many.
