The Ladybird ABC

It’s not a recipe book but I couldn’t resist posting some pictures up of the 1962 edition of The Ladybird ABC that I picked up while Christmas shopping the other day. The little hardback is full of gorgeous illustrations by G.W. Robinson, and I love it so much I might not be able to give it to my daughter as initially planned. Of course, the spreads I’ve chosen to show you here feature edible things and kitchen utensils… Vegetarians please forgive me the duck, fish and, er, the bunny.

May sound a little criminal…but i bought the ‘Garden Bird’ edition to make into a mobile above the table so my daughter can learn the names of the birds she sees every day. I like the illustrations, especially the robin in a tree of blossom and a sleepy tawny owl.

PS We’re not lucky enough to see owls every day, I just couldn’t resist adding them.

I must say I did breathe in sharply at the thought of taking the pages out but illustrations as good as these do deserve to be seen more often, so, on second thoughts, good on you! I have a torn copy of Lucy Cousins’ nursery rhymes that I intend to ‘upcycle’ when we finally get the girl’s bedroom finished 😉 xxx
