Bobby Dazzler creators Rosie Short and Fumie Kamijo make scrumptious handmade dolls ‘with a story to tell’ from a bijou studio on London’s curry mile. Their dolls can be found all over the world, from Selfridges window displays to children’s bedrooms in Tokyo, and each season new Bobby Dazzler characters appear. When I caught up with Rosie today she told me she has been busy making “loads of rabbit men” for their spring collection as well as dolls inspired by neon colours, geometric shapes… fruit and vegetables. As soon as I heard about the ‘five a day’ Bobby Dazzler dolls I knew I had to nab them for my blog, so here they are: the Vegetable Men, whose mission is to “promote healthy eating in the shops of Tokyo.”
I took this as an opportunity to ask Rosie what the Bobbys munch on in their studio on a typical day, but it turns out they had to look a bit further than their lunch boxes to find inspiration for these little guys. “We eat crap at work,” says Rosie, “mostly toasted sandwiches made in the Breville grill, sometimes experimental, but usually cheese and tomato or Branston.”
“Then Jill Green usually comes in at teabreak with a plate of chopped chocolate. A typical ‘Jill Platter’ features a Marathon bar*, Dairy Milk, biscuits…”
*nineties for Snickers
“Later on we’ll have crisps… Monster Munch, Hula Hoops and Squares are our favourites.”
“But we do have the odd few homemade treats too. Here is a pineapple upside down cake made by Tess who helps us and Jill out…”
“and these are Jill’s ‘Easter buns’.”
Nevermind the kids, sounds like the Bobbys might need to pay heed to the Veg Men themselves!
You can bag your very own Bobby Dazzler to love and cherish (but not to eat) from the Bobby Dazzler online store.
